US Senate calls for Hyundai and KIA to attend hearings on engine fire

The Republican chairman of the Senate Business Committee and senior Democrats said Wednesday they had asked top U.S. business executives from Hyundai Motor (005380.KS) and Kia Motor (000270.KS) to attend a hearing on reports of engine fire involving the two companies on November 14. Earlier, the security advocacy group expressed concern about the car's fire in the absence of a collision. The Center for Auto Safety, a nonprofit consumer protection agency, said last week that since June 12, U.S. safety regulators have received 103 complaints of engine fire and called for an immediate recall of nearly three million vehicles.
Hyundai Motor said in a statement that it had received requests for hearings, and is currently discussing the matter. The company also said it was actively monitoring and assessing potential safety hazards, including non-collision fire, and would quickly recall all vehicles with safety defects.
