U.S. Defense Secretary James Mattis said on Saturday that the killing of Saudi Arabian journalist Jamal Khashoggi undermined stability in the Middle East and that the United States would take more action against the culprits in the case.

For Saudi Arabia, the murder of Washington Post columnist Kashuji has escalated into a crisis, and many Saudi allies have expressed outrage. With Iran's growing influence, Saudi Arabia, America's main ally in the Middle East, is of great importance.
But Matisse also said that the United States has not diminished its respect for the Saudi people, and Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir said that the people involved will be prosecuted in Saudi Arabia and that it will take time to investigate.
U.S. President Trump said the case needs to be investigated and stressed the role of Saudi Arabia as an ally against Iranian and Islamic militants. Saudi Arabia is also a major buyer of US weapons.
"Given our common interest in peace and unshakable respect for human rights, the murder of Kashuji in a diplomatic body must be of great concern to all," Matisse said at a conference in Bahrain.
"Any country that does not comply with international practices and the rule of law will destabilize the region, and this is the time when regional stability is most needed," Matisse said. But he did not mention the name of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman at all in his speech.
Saudi prosecutors say Kasuji's murder was premeditated, contradicting previous official statements. Previous statements said it was an accident in a dispute and physical conflict at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.
Saudi officials also said Kashuji was accidentally killed in a failed security operation that attempted to send him back to Saudi Arabia.
