Florence, the strongest storm to threaten the United States this year, upgraded to Category 4 on Monday, bringing it closer to Carolina, prompting more than a million people to evacuate to higher ground.
According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Florence's maximum sustained wind speed is 130 miles per hour (209 kilometers), and it will intensify further before landing early Thursday, bringing heavy rainfall and possibly causing widespread and severe flooding.
"It is expected that by Thursday Florence will become an extremely dangerous large hurricane," NHC said in the announcement.
Florence's trajectory suggests it may have landed near the North Carolina-South Carolina border. The governors of all two states have declared a state of emergency.
