Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is expected to win Thursday's ruling party leadership race to become Japan's longest-serving prime minister; he will try to consolidate his policies, including revising the peace constitution.
However, the first challenge he must face is the possible meeting with us president Trump next week. The United States, Japan's key ally, will press for a $69 billion reduction in Japan's trade surplus with the United States, nearly two-thirds of which comes from auto exports.
Andouble must also rely on fewer and fewer policy instruments to sustain domestic economic growth. After several years of massive banknote printing, the Bank of Japan has lost nearly all its ammunition. Japan's huge public debt and rising social welfare costs from an aging population also leave little room for Abe to expand fiscal spending.
Abe promised to revive the economy and strengthen defense when he returned to power in 2012, and is now widely expected to defeat former defense minister Shi Po-mao and be re-elected president of the LDP, so attention will be focused on how much Shi can win in 810 votes.
Of the 810 votes, 405 were members of the national assembly and 405 of Party members. If Shigeru Ishiba performs well, it will be more difficult for Andouble to pursue his agenda.
Abe will meet with trump during next week's UN General Assembly meeting. The two have established a close relationship, but Trump has made it clear that he is dissatisfied with bilateral trade imbalances and hopes to reach a bilateral agreement to solve the problem.
